According to a new survey conducted by Infotrak Kenyans have named Generation Z (Gen Zs) their greatest heroes.
According to the survey, Gen Z activism has had a significant impact in lobbying the government on important issues. The poll found that 23% of Kenyans chose Gen Zers as heroes, overtaking more established politicians like Raila Odinga, who received 18%. After an outstanding season, Faith Kipyegon, the world record holder in athletics, came in third place with 11% of the vote.
At 8% of the vote, President William Ruto, the recently removed Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino of Embakasi East were tied. Kalonzo Musyoka received five per cent, former president Uhuru Kenyatta received seven per cent, and Fred Matiang’i, Eliud Kipchoge, and Morara Kebaso tied at three per cent.
Following their outspoken activism against the contentious Finance Bill 2024, which prompted protests across the country, Gen Zers have seen a spike in support. Their actions in the streets and online were crucial in the bill’s eventual withdrawal. President William Ruto dissolved his cabinet and appointed a new, more inclusive team as a result of their activism, which also brought about a significant political upheaval.
Kipyegon’s Golden Year
Faith Kipyegon, Kenya’s third-ranked athlete, made history by winning three consecutive Olympic gold medals in the 1,500 metres at the Paris 2024 Olympics, breaking the world record with a time of 3:49.04 during the Paris Diamond League.
Her achievements have earned her a nomination for the prestigious 2024 Track Athlete of the Year award, where she is one of three Kenyan athletes in the running.
Lastly, despite his influence, political activist Morara, who is well-known for exposing government inefficiencies and stalled projects, only garnered 3% of the vote.
