Women leaders from the Maa Community have strongly criticized the cyberbullying and sexual attacks directed at Defence Cabinet Secretary nominee Soipan Tuya. Soipan, who previously served as Environment CS in President William Ruto’s first cabinet, was appointed to the same position on July 19, before being reassigned to the Defence docket on July 23.
Despite surviving a purge that saw other members of the initial cabinet excluded from Ruto’s new list, Soipan’s appointment came under intense scrutiny on social media platforms. This scrutiny led to negative remarks and sexual attacks regarding her elevation to the Cabinet.
Despite her extensive experience in leadership, including two terms as the Woman Representative for Narok County, the attacks persisted.
In response, women legislators from Laikipia, Samburu, and Kajiado Counties have condemned the cyberbullying and sexual attacks aimed at Soipan. They emphasized the need for authorities to address gender-based violence, noting the unjust criticism that often accompanies the appointment of women to leadership positions.
“We personally know Tuya. What we are witnessing is gender-based violence. Those responsible for spreading edited pictures should be held accountable. We are concerned about the recurring trend where every time a woman is appointed, baseless accusations about her personal life surface,” the legislators asserted.
Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo also expressed her disapproval of the attacks, advocating for equal treatment of male and female leaders during appointments.
“I want to encourage the Gen Zs. I support them, but let’s not fall into the trap of sexual innuendos,” Millie emphasized.
Soipan Tuya holds a law degree from the University of Nairobi and began her career as a legal officer for non-profit organizations before entering politics.
